Hudson County Inaugurates Underground Storage Tank Removal Program
On Tuesday morning April 7th at 10 a.m. the County of Hudson, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the NJ Dept. of Environmental Protection Agency (NJDEP) will be breaking ground on an Underground Storage Tank (UST) removal project at 104-108 Harrison Avenue, Harrison NJ. The project is funded through a $100,000 grant from the USEPA.
Several dignitaries will be attending the groundbreaking ceremony including Jane Kenny, Region II Administrator, USEPA; Evan Van Hook, Dept. Commissioner, NJDEP, Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and Harrison Mayor Raymond McDonough. Other local officials are also expected to attend. The project is being engineered by Hatch, Mott, MacDonald of Millburn NJ.
Hudson County was the only grant recipient from the state of New Jersey, receiving $100,000 for cleanup of municipally owned leaky USTs. The County is a Brownfields Assessment Demonstration Pilot and has received Brownfields Supplemental Assistance and Brownfields Revolving Loan funds. The Hudson County Economic Development Corporation administers all of these programs. The State of New Jersey will work with Hudson County to make full use of the USTfields Pilot funds. This project will help implement the countys long-range economic development plan. The county plans to conduct site assessments and cleanup activities at four underground storage tank sites within its Brownfields Pilot properties. The presence of underground storage tanks has limited the Countys efforts to revitalize its Pilot properties.
