Hudson County Brownfields Pilot Program Wins Environmental Excellence Award from NJ DEP

The Hudson County Brownfield Pilot Program, which includes Bayonne, Guttenberg, Harrison, Hoboken, Kearny, North Bergen, Weehawken and West New York, has been awarded the Environmental Excellence Award in the “Open and Effective Government” category by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.

In a letter from DEP Commissioner Robert Shinn, the Award is described as “a way to recognize outstanding environmental programs and projects in the state.”

Brownfields are defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency as parcels of land which have real or perceived levels of environmental contamination. The US EPA and the NJ DEP are the lead agencies providing the funding and support for the Hudson County Brownfield Pilot Program.

“We’re very proud of this award and we owe it to the hard work and cooperation of our stakeholder group, which has demonstrated that we can do great things as a team,” said Hudson Economic Development Executive Director Elizabeth Spinelli, whose agency’s offices serve as headquarters for the County Pilot Program.

The Hudson County Brownfield Pilot Program works with stakeholders from the four participating communities to provide technical, communications and legal counseling services with the goal of identifying appropriate brownfields for redevelopment and marketing efforts.
